Ecosystems at Cape Jourimain

Aerial photo of Cape Jourimain Cape Jourimain Nature Centre is located withing the Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area. With 10 distinct ecosystems in a relatively small area, Cape Jouriman provides habitats for a wide diversity of plants and animals, and offers visitors an outstanding opportunity to experience the diversity of nature. May is an excellent month for bird watching, while June provides some great opportunities to enjoy the areas' wild blooms of orchids and fruiting shrubs such as serviceberry (locally known as Shadbush or Indian berry). In early summer, breeding birds such as osprey, cliff swallows, sharp-tailed sparrows and willets are at their busiest, defending territories and raising their families. Later in the summer, wild roses decorate the shoreline, followed by asters and goldenrods. Watching birdsIn late summer the shorebird migration begins and beaches and marshes seem to come alive as these well-camouflaged birds skitter and scatter in search of food to sustain them on their long flight south.

Nature Trails

Trail entranceThe Cape Jourimain Nature Centre has a trail system made up of three trails and a beach access that provide visitors with outstanding opportunities for exploring different habitats and enjoying a wide range of coastal panoramas. A fourth trail, the Oulton Trail, is not accessible at this time.
