Renewable Energy

Solar_hot_water_PanelThe designers of the Cape Jourimain Nature Centre faced a daunting challenge. The realities of being located on a small coastal island and within a National Wildlife Area demanded a strict ethic of environmental protection. How could we ensure that the thousands of visitors using the facilities had as minimal an impact as possible on the site? Cape Jourimain Nature Centre was developed to follow a leave nothing behind but footprints approach to water and waste management. As an environmental education facility we want to demonstrate practical alternatives for reducing our impact on the environment.

Wind

A 10 kW Bergey wind turbine generates some of the Centre's electricity. The turbine is net metered.

Solar

Our solar hot water panel helps heat the water required for our kitchen.

Geothermal

We use the earth's energy to help heat and cool down our buildings.

WaterComposting Units

We collect rainwater to reduce our use of well-water. Our composting toilets reduce use of water.

Greywater

Compost tea from our composting toilets as well as all other waste water is treated in our greywater treatment system and ensures that our waste water is properly treated before it is released into the environment.

Renewable Energy Hub

If you are interested in small to medium-scale renewable energy projects in New Brunswick, Cape Jourimain Nature Centre manages a provincial portal for this type of information: Renewable Energy Hub.
