Educational Programs
The following programs have been developed to match learning opportunities at Cape Jourimain Nature Center with specific outcomes of the Atlantic Canada elementary and middle school curricula.
Each program emphasizes human interactions with the environment, responsible resource use and positive environmental actions.
Students are challenged and encouraged to make commitments to positive environmental changes in their own lives and communities.
All programs are thoroughly researched, delivered by skilled interpreters and include hands on experiences and activities to stimulate interest and learning.
After booking a program, teachers will be provided with introductory information about Cape Jourimain and their selected program(s), as well as suggestions for further activities and additional resources.
Migration Mysteries
The seasonal migrations of birds and other animals around the globe is one of Nature's most impressive and mysterious phenomena. The presentation may be effectively combined with explorations of our exhibit gallery or a guided bird walk on our trails.
Specific curriculum outcomes covered by this program include:
grade 4 Habitats
grade 6 Diversity of Life and Flight
grade 7 Interactions within Ecosystems
This program also addresses outcomes in the social sciences curriculum within the themes of Interdependence and People, Place and Environment.
Plants are Amazing!
This program will help students develop an understanding and appreciation of plants and their diverse contributions to the environment and our well being. Both the structure and functioning of plants will be explained through dynamic activities. The diversity of plants, their habitats, and their roles will be examined along one of the Centre's trails. The care and conservation of native plant communities will also be addressed.
Curriculum outcomes that can be addressed through this program include:
grade 3 Plant Growth and Changes and Soils
grade 4 Habitats
grade 6 Diversity
grade 7 Interactions within Ecosystems
Field to Forest
Most of the area of what is now the Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area was field and pasture only a few decades ago. Since the abandonment of homesteads in this area, the processes of natural succession have been turning old fields to forests. The Field to Forest program introduces students to the concept of succession and provides opportunities for the students to conduct investigations in a variety of successional stages. These investigations take a variety of forms involving the students senses and observation skills and help develop their ability to make comparisons and hypothesize explanations for their observations. The regenerative ability of nature will be examined in the context of various human activities such as forestry, agriculture and urban development.
This program is most appropriate to:
grade 7 science curriculum
can be adapted to suit curricula in grade 4 Habitats
can be adapted to suit curriculagrade 6 Diversity
Shore Explore
Shorelines have a great inherent draw for people of all ages and the myriad of intriguing creatures that inhabit the shoreline are of endless fascination. Drawing on the natural charisma of the shoreline this program provides an opportunity for students to develop their skills in classification, their understanding of natural patterns and their underlying causes, habitats, and adaptations. Causes and issues surrounding marine pollution and inappropriate shoreline development will also be addressed.
This program is very adaptable.
Specific curriculum outcomes covered by this program include:
grade 3 Plant Growth and Change
grade 4 Rocks, Minerals and Erosion and Habitats
grade 6 Diversity of Life
grade 7 Interactions within Ecosystems
grade 8 Water Systems
Life's Liquid — Water
Water is one of our most precious resources and one that most Canadians take for granted. At Cape Jourimain we have a number of green technologies that help us to conserve freshwater and effectively treat wastewater on-site. In this program students discover the importance of water to their daily lives, the limited nature of our freshwater resources, and examine solutions to the water conservation challenge.
Specific curriculum outcomes covered by this program include:
grade 2 Air
grade 2 Water
ABCs of Energy
The basic concept of energy, where it comes from, how we use it and the implications of our energy needy habits are the focus of this program. Students will come to recognize that there are many pollutants associated with energy use and that these are having serious impacts on our climate and health. Students will consider the implications of potential impacts of climate change such as sea level rise, increases in extreme weather events, and the consequences for wildlife habitats, fisheries, agricultural and forestry. The program emphasizes stewardship of resources and environmental responsibility.
Specific curriculum outcomes covered by this program include:
grade 5 Weather
grade 6 Electricity
